What is “Unsupported”?

Since we announced the existence of LOMBOK 400KM, we have received questions about what “Unsupported” or “Independent” really means. In fact, this is not a new concept. Well-known cycling events such as Audax/Randonneuring have long championed the spirit of self-reliance in cycling.

Simply put, riding independently or unsupported means that cyclists must rely solely on themselves to complete the LOMBOK 400KM route. This means participants are not allowed to bring in, request, or accept help from third parties such as friends, relatives, family, acquaintances, or local residents in any form. All essential needs—clothing, spare parts, water, food, medicine, and so on—must either be carried from the start or purchased along the way.

Of course, in reality, interactions with local residents or acquaintances may still occur. However, the fundamental principles of independence and fairness must always be respected.

Ask yourself:

  • Is this help or facility being offered because of my personal relationship with the person?
→ If YES, then it violates the principles of independence and fairness.
  • Is the help or facility I receive equally accessible to the general public or other cyclists?
→ If NO, then it violates the principles of independence and fairness.

The values of “independence” and “fairness” are at the very core of LOMBOK 400KM. Any violation of these principles will result in a cyclist being scratched from the competition.
